DBE Ekhurhuleni South & Chelo - A Partnership with District 6
Following lengthy briefings with the office of District Director: Ekhurhuleni South Department of Basic Education, Chelo Communications Manager Daniel Choshi was effusive in announcing a partnership that has the potential to directly impact over 200 000 learners in a district that has been defined by communities that have consistently ranked top as high-density zones experiencing year-on-year institutional overcrowding.
Ekhurhuleni South District
Ekhurhuleni South is a combination of highly commercial zones encompassing areas like Alberton, Germiston, and parts of Boksburg alongside township communities like Katlehong, Vosloorus and Thokoza. The district has 260 schools, but because of rapid economic migration patterns into the East Rand, over 58% of the schools operate over capacity.
Africa's workshop, as Ekhurhuleni is affectionately known, has a significant number of schools offering a relatively high level education, which is consequent to the economic activities in the area. However, a negative byproduct of this is that schools are currently overwhelmed by large applications and are unable to wholly satisfactorily accommodate the amount of learners seeking education in the district.
Chelo's Vision for District 6
By unlocking all stakeholders in the local communities of District 6 to directly impact in elevating the quality of education with increasing access to all learners, Chelo is positioning itself to be a decisive role-player in the lives of East rand school children. The partnership targets the implementation of teaching and learning resources, learner wellbeing and safety for learners in GET and FET phases.
